MoneyWays
Many young people have no insight into their income and expenses and therefore get into financial problems. One fifth of Dutch young people even take big risks when it comes to money, sometimes resulting in poverty and debt. There is little talk about it or only when it is (much) too late: money matters are still taboo. And that while money affects many aspects: education, housing and mental health.
MoneyWays is a preventive peer education program that is running in 1,000 classes throughout the Netherlands this school year. Within MoneyWays, attention is paid to the knowledge and skills about dealing with money, but also to the social-emotional side of it, such as peer pressure, temptation and shame. Young role models – peer educators – who are close to the target group share their knowledge about money matters and their personal experiences in three lessons. They open up the conversation and reduce the barrier to asking for help.
The Dutch Association of Insurers, Diversion and Nibud have jointly ensured that the urgent theme of 'insurance' is integrated within MoneyWays. As a result, insurance has become an integral part of MoneyWays' teaching materials since the 2015-2016 school year. This is also necessary because there is still a lot of ignorance about insurance among young people.
With MoneyWays, Diversion and Nibud bring together various parties that feel responsible for the fight against poverty and debt problems: central government, municipalities, companies, private funds and schools throughout the Netherlands. And not without success: tens of thousands of young people in more than sixty municipalities have now followed the program.
