The desire to develop joint reporting standards arose from the fear that all insurers would each work individually with the reporting obligations under the CSRD legislation. "After all, it is difficult to explain that exactly the same car emits more with one car insurer than with another insurer, simply because they use different calculation methods or source data. By developing an ESG standard together, you are (cost) efficient, it ensures transparency and better explainability to the regulator," explains Minkenberg.
Special working group launched
Minkenberg, formerly an Innovation Advisor at the Association's Insurance Academy, was appointed program manager at the end of last year to steer the program in the right direction. In June 2024, the Board of the Association commissioned the sectoral approach for the development of ESG reporting standards (CSRD). "A special working group has now been set up, consisting of sustainability specialists from Achmea, a.s.r., NN and Univé. This brings us to the next phase of the programme," explains Minkenberg.
Participants wanted
Minkenberg is looking for specialists from insurers who want to be part of a car insurance sector team and a fire sector team. "These are employees who can assess definitions, calculations, and standards in order to develop standards that we will eventually apply throughout the industry with the help of their expertise." Members who would like to stay informed of developments can also report to Minkenberg.
Doubt
In response to the question of how this programme relates to the uncertainty caused by the CSRD-Omnibus regulation, Minkenberg indicates that the programme is flexible enough to accommodate the final proposals. "The program is in line with the voluntary SME standards and therefore remains relevant for small and medium-sized insurers."
