Sustainable damage repair

One of the main themes of the Association's medium-term plan is sustainable insurance. In addition to topics such as the safe energy transition and sustainable investment policy, sustainable damage repair is also mentioned as one of the ambitions. Together with Schoonmakend Nederland and NIVRE (Dutch Institute of Registered Experts Foundation), the Dutch Association of Insurers signed the Sustainable Damage Repair Manifesto in June 2023.

What does that ambition entail?

Sustainable repair should be common practice in handling claims, rather than replacing them, by the end of 2024. By sustainable recovery we mean repairing damage with minimal impact on the environment and maximum efficiency, with a strong incentive to reduce CO2 emissions in the handling process. It's not just about repairing the damage, but also about using eco-friendly materials, reducing waste, and preserving the quality and value of the items. By embracing sustainability when repairing damage, the chain contributes to a greener future.

What do insurers do?

Many insurers are already recovering sustainably. In a series on sustainable damage repair, insurers have their say to share their experiences. They answer questions such as: how far along are they with sustainable damage repair, what are they already doing and can they do?

What do Schoonmakend Nederland and NIVRE do?

Working Groups Manifesto | Sustainable damage repair property market

We have the ambition to make sustainable damage repair commonplace in the property market. Together with the entire chain, because that's where the strength lies. We want to achieve this by working in three working groups:

1. Mobility & people 
2. Energy equipment
3. Circularity equipment

The signatories of the manifesto are represented in the three working groups. The first working group sessions started at the beginning of February. The other working group sessions will take place in April and June.

The manifesto has two phases: January to June and August to December. In that first phase, as much output as possible must come from the working groups. They will work on concrete questions such as: What are the 5 largest 'CO2 emitters' in this specific value chain from the perspective of damage repair, expertise and non-life insurance, where in the process the most CO2 emissions can be saved and how? And by whom of each chain partner can this be achieved? By (1) making certain adjustments to the process (e.g. by using more natural ventilation) and/or (2) certain innovations (e.g. working with energy-efficient dryers)? How can we operate in the most sustainable way in these three areas? What is the savings potential, for example with regard to CO2 emissions? And what does that require of the customer, the various other parties involved and of the trade associations in the damage repair chain?

These results will be communicated transparently, so stay connected!

In phase 2, the working group members involved sign up for a detailed idea and then implement it. The experiences are then shared with the rest of the market.
